Nearly 4000 women drivers were interviewed and at least a fifth of them confirmed that they have touched their mascara while driving. For the UK, this means at least 2.7 million women have touched up make up while driving. Of these interviewed females at least three percent admitted that they caused collision or were near collision due to their touch up distractions. In other words, at least 27 percent women drivers in the UK have confessed putting on makeup while driving and nine percent of those have crashed at least once.
Britain’s Diamond Motor Insurer company surveyed women drivers about their driving habits. Careless driving in Britain includes applying makeup, eating and map reading as well. These are also punishable offences apart from the regular reckless driving practices that can lead to prison sentence up to two years.
The company says that the figures are indeed ‘worrying’ as these women drivers not only put themselves but others also at risk on road. "Women are generally great at doing more than one thing at once but this is definitely one area where multitasking should not be practised. "Is your mascara more important than yours and other road users' safety? Even if you're lucky enough to arrive at your destination safely, you could be charged with careless driving if spotted by the police,” says Diamond managing director Sian Lewis.
