Toyota Motor recalls 6.9 lakh sedans made in China

Japanese auto company Toyota Motor Corporation has ordered a recall of 688,314 sedans that it manufactured in China through local joint venture firms. The car models being recalled are the Camry, the Yaris, the Corolla and the Vios. Toyota was forced to recall the cars after it discovered a fault in their electric window system. Following reports from customers, the company found out that that parts inside the window switches could cause part of the interior furnishing to melt, produce smoke or even catch fire. This will be the biggest auto recall in China after 2004.

The affected cars include 384,736 units of the Camry and 22,767 units of the Yaris manufactured by Guangzhou Toyota between May 15 and Dec 31 of 2008; 35,523 units of the Vios manufactured by Tianjin FAW-Toyota Motor between Feb 18 and Dec 25 of 2008, and 245,288 units of the Corolla manufactured between May 17, 2007 and Dec 25 of 2008. The current recall comes after a similar step taken by Toyota in April, when 260,000 Chinese-made units of the Camry were recalled when the company discovered a defect in the brakes.
