Japanese automaker, Toyota Motor Corporation, which recently recalled 4.1 million of its vehicles globally and 5.4 million vehicles in the US due to defective accelerator pedals and floor mats, has come up with a remedy for the problem. The company submitted a repair proposal to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US last week, an official from the Transportation Department said. The safety agency has not rejected the proposal, implying that Toyota can go ahead with its repair plan. A number of Toyota dealers reconfirmed that the company was ready with a solution, which they said would be announced shortly.
Toyota had earlier said that it would stop the production of eight of its models for a week in the US and in Canada, starting from Monday. It said that a similar step would not be taken in Europe, however, as a remedy was already being implemented there. Toyota Motor Chief Executive, Akio Toyoda, apologised last week for the unprecedenced recall, but added that consumers should continue to be confident about driving Toyota cars.
