New Sketches of Nissan’s Global Compact Car Model Revealed

Japanese car maker Nissan revealed new sketches of its global compact car model that will be manufactured in 5 different countries including its Chennai facility in India. "We are serious and committed in our plans for India, and are all excited as we gear up to start production in May 2010," said Kiminobu Tokuyama, managing director and chief executive of Nissan Motor India. The company will roll out three different models of its hatchback and sedan versions along with an MPV from its five plants across the globe.

The Indian manufacturing unit will be able to ship 110,000 units by 2011 and its capacity can be further increased to 180,000 units later on. The cars will be exported to more than 150 countries in the world. "The car is being built on our global platform at our plant in Chennai. We are not in a position to disclose the final name of the car and also other details related to product specifications and pricing, which will be announced at some time in future," a Nissan Motor India spokesperson said. The two sketches show a spunky little hatchback. Details include an unusual curvy roof line, a steeply raked windshield and a fairly aggressive-looking face. Nissan also said that the model will qualify as Thailand's first "Eco-car."

Nissan is currently setting up its manufacturing unit jointly with Renault in Orgadam near Chennai. It is a Rs 4500 crore plant which will have installed capacity of manufacturing 400,000 cars annually when run on full capacity.
