GM to focus on India, China and Brazil for future growth

General Motors will be focusing increasingly on India, China and Brazil to expand its business in the coming years. The company’s President, Mr Timothy E Lee, said last week that India offered a very good opportunity to GM to grow its Chevrolet brand, a process which is already well under way with the Chevrolet Cruze and the Chevrolet Beat clocking consistently high sales in the past few months. GM India’s 50:50 partnership with China’s Shanghai Auto is also critical to the company’s growth in the commercial vehicle segment.

Meanwhile, GM India has decided to expand its research & development programme in the country by hiring 400 more engineers at its technical centre in Bangalore. The company may also manufacture a new car designed and developed in India at its Talegaon plant in Maharashtra. In addition, it is planning to make the country an important centre for exporting both vehicle components and fully manufactured cars in the coming years.
