Bangalore to have Tata Nanos as Public Transport System

Karantaka government has proposed to purchase 10,000 Tata Nano to replace the autorickshaws in the city. According to the government, the cost of both the vehicles comes to be nearly same and there are constant complaints about auto drivers. “There is not much difference in the cost between an autorickshaw and a Nano. “We continue to receive complaints about auto drivers. Moreover, their number in the city is insufficient compared to the population,’ said Transport minister R Ashoka.

Karnataka government proposes to purchase 10,000 Nano either from its own resources or maybe even take loans. It intends to rent it out to drivers and share the profit in 40:60 ratio with them. The minister also stated that replacing auto-rickshaws with low cost cars will also check pollution levels and provide security to passengers, especially women, who are continuously harassed by auto drivers. The drivers who run the taxis, will be authorized and registered under BMTC which will eliminate the possibility of the meters being tampered with.

Transport department officials were reluctant to give a definite outline of the entire concept and stated that finer details are being worked out.
